Airport Awareness Day

Airport Awareness, Leadership Union 2014

Airport Awareness, Leadership Union 2014

The Leadership Union 2014 class, a program sponsored by the Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce, is hosting a community project on Saturday March 29, 2014 called Airport Awareness Day. This event has been created to increase the awareness of the current and proposed facilities at the Blairsville Municipal Airport, located off Old Blue Ridge Highway, to the local residents, the surrounding counties, and the airports within a 150 mile radius of Blairsville. Attendees will gain a glimpse of the broad historical aspect of aviation in our region and be able to take a look at what the future holds for the local airport.

This is a great educational FREE family fun day out. There will be static displays and aircraft presentations throughout the event. There will be coloring contests, aircraft imitation exercises for the children, and goodie bags for the first 100 guests provided by local businesses! The Civil Air Patrol will be available for questions and demonstrations. They will be conducting their Open House in conjunction with the Airport Awareness Day and will have their headquarters open for community members to see all of the available resources and technology used to train their cadets. During the event the cadets will perform drills for the public’s enjoyment.

Parking will be available at the United Community Bank building within the Airport Industrial Park and Mountain View RV Resort adjacent to the Airport. Airport Awareness Day will start at 10:00am and end at 2:00pm with a light lunch served around noon.

Random Acts of Kindness

I’ve always been a big fan of Random Acts of Kindness. I’ve witnessed peopleRAK in my life give so generously with no expectation of return. From surprise goodie bags and gifts for no reason to buying a stranger’s meal in a restaurant and handing a child $5 while they are standing in the grocery store line begging for candy, I’ve witnessed it all. I’ll never forget the first time I was the recipient of the generosity of a stranger’s participation in the “Drive Thru Difference.” You know, where the mystery person in front of you pays for your meal, and when you get to the window the employee tells you that your bill has been paid. What an awesome feeling. Yes, I smiled for long time after that. But you know what is even greater about Random Acts of Kindness? They inspire more Random Acts of Kindness! You better believe the next time I was in the drive thru, I wanted the person behind me to experience the same happiness that I had experienced through the small gesture of an unknown person.

Why do I write to you this week about Random Acts of Kindness? Because there is a new platform for sharing these wonderful stories and expressing public appreciation for the good that others are doing. As a community service project through the Leadership Union Program, a facebook page has been established to enhance community awareness of altruistic acts that occur locally. That can be found at www.facebook.com/kindnessinBlairsville. You may also submit your story to the North Georgia News in the form of a Letter to the Editor. Whatever avenue you choose, let’s collectively celebrate the kind acts of our neighbors.

Union County is a generous community and our residents are among the nicest people in the world. I hope you will join the fun in recognizing these wonderful acts of kindness and even consider paying it forward by giving a bit extra yourself. Have a great week!
