Guest Blog: Jesica Clemmons of Sunrise Grocery

I grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, but it always seemed as if my heart was born in the mountains. My mom and dad used to bring me to the mountains of North Georgia every chance they got; sometimes it was to hike & other times it was just to have a break from the chaos that always surrounded us. I found a comfort in that peace that we received when traveling for a weekend getaway. I loved it so much that when I turned sixteen and got my license, I would often come up to Blairsville for a hike and to see all the beautiful scenery rather than hang out in the city.

My love for these mountains and the town of Blairsville ended up building the path for me meeting my future husband. So, not only did I snag the perfect guy for me, but I also ended up living in what is for me, Heaven on earth. Not a bad deal, huh? These mountains and the town of Blairsville gave me the love of my life, an amazing job working at the oldest business in the county, and many great friends in my new hometown. Not to mention, I don’t have to drive up anymore for a weekend getaway. My weekends are now much more laid back and fun-filled.

Jason and I feel so lucky to live here. We live in a spot where most people come for vacation, and they come with good reason. We try to use every free moment we have to explore. Most evenings after we close Sunrise, we take a drive around our mountain town to take in the views. Rather than sit in traffic, we take in the fresh mountain air. We both always say it is better than sitting at home watching T.V.  We usually either drive up to Brasstown Bald and look for all the bears along the way or we drive up Richard Russell to watch the sky change into an array of colors from the setting sun.

Of course, the weekends are our favorite and are never dull. On Saturdays we are at the historic Sunrise Grocery all day. Luckily, Sunrise isn’t just a job for us, we absolutely love being there. We sell Jason’s photography, my mother in law’s knitting, my homemade soap, and lots of local goodies like jams, jellies, honey and t-shirts. So, it’s all fun things and fun people. We get to catch up with a lot of locals who come in to see us, and we also get to meet many new people from all over who are here visiting.  We strike up the fire for our boiled peanuts pretty early and from there it is usually pretty nonstop dipping up peanuts and chatting with our customers all day. It’s never a bad day at the office.

On Sundays we are able to take some time off and usually take full advantage of all this beautiful place has to offer. Sometimes we set out pretty early, as in four o’clock in the morning. Jason is a photographer and I am a nature lover so we will occasionally go somewhere to catch the sunrise. One of our favorite places is Brasstown Bald, which is the highest spot in Georgia. We’ll get up, make a BIG pot of coffee to throw in a thermos, and head out the door to hike up to the tower. A time or two we have been above the clouds and it is unbelievable! What beauty! We watch the clouds below us turn a golden orange before the sun peaks over them. One thing is for sure, we have never regretted getting up early to see a sunrise. As a matter of fact, it is a pretty amazing way to start the day.

We’re not always so ambitious when it comes to getting up early, but we definitely are both eager to get out of the house to go find some fun. Whether it is going to grab coffee at Cabin Coffee, popping into Sunrise to say hello, or head up to Mountain Crossings to check out their outdoor gear or walk a little of the Appalachian Trail, we make our rounds and then find something to do outside. A lot of times we’ll head to Helton Creek waterfall, especially if we have just had a good rain or if it snows. Other times we may go to Vogel State Park for a picnic or to walk around the lake. Vogel is both mine and Jason’s favorite state park in Georgia. You just can’t beat the view there with the lake and mountains as its backdrop. I got to say, it is a great place for a date. We went on one of our first dates there and we have the photo Jason took of the waterfall that day hanging in our room.

In the evening, we sometimes head to town to go out to eat at one of the restaurants. We have a lot of great places to eat in Blairsville so we usually just take turns going to different places. Other times we’ll go hike up to Wildcat to watch the sun go down. It is by far the absolute best place to catch a sunset that I’ve ever been to. It’s a pretty small hike, maybe about a mile, and the view is more than worth every step. It’s a great place to take a picnic or bottle of wine, sit out on the rock and toast to a stunning sunset.

Hometown Holiday Shopping Event

The Christmas season is fast approaching, and so is the biggest shopping day of the year – Black Friday. It seems like the sales, and in some cases the crowds, get crazier every year! While we certainly salute the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping warriors, the local businesses here in Blairsville offer a unique opportunity to get ahead on your Christmas shopping. Just prior to Thanksgiving, the Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce hosts a Hometown Holiday Shopping event where patrons to participating business can get a jump start on seasonal shopping. To get your coupons for participating merchants, you can either:

  1. Go to www.VisitBlairsvilleGA.com, click on “request a Newsletter” and subscribe to Buy Local Coupons & Events.  The coupons will be emailed to you prior to the Buy Local Holiday Shopping Event Weekend.
  2. Give us a call at 706-745-5789.
  3. Visit the Chamber offices to pick up your coupons.

This year, the Hometown Holiday Shopping event takes place from November 17th-19th. This provides the perfect opportunity for our local retailers to beat the “big guys” to the holiday rush. So, before you wait in the long Black Friday lines or cross your fingers that your internet connection is fast enough on Cyber Monday, make your lists, check them twice, and Buy Local this holiday season!

In addition to the Hometown Holiday Shopping event, the Mountain Regional Arts and Crafts Guild will host their annual Mistletoe Market on November 19th and 20th where you can buy the finest in mountain arts and crafts. Whatever your style of “shop ‘til you drop” might be, Blairsville-Union County has plenty of options during this wonderful season! Take 5 with Tommy Drake

allstateThis week’s Take 5 is with Tommy Drake of Allstate. Tommy is a member of the Blairsville-Union County Chamber of Commerce and is active in the Blairsville Downtown Development Authority. He and his team are eager to assist you with your insurance and financial services needs. Let’s take a moment to get to know him better.

  1. What is your job title and what do you do at your Allstate Agency?

I am the owner of the Enotah Group, an Exclusive Allstate agency. Many people think of us as just insuring cars and houses, but we also offer insurance for businesses and commercial vehicles, builders risk, general liability, umbrella policies, off road vehicles, motorcycles, tractors, boats & collectable vehicles and even pets. We also a full range of financial services including life insurance, retirement savings, mutual funds, IRAs, annuities and college savings plans. We cover Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

  1. What is one of your favorite quotes?

My favorite quote is attributed to Ralph Waldo Emmerson (among others) although many versions of it have been circulated for quite some time:

“Watch your thoughts for they become words, watch your words for they become actions, watch your actions, for they become habits, watch your habits for they become your character, watch your character for it becomes your destiny.”

  1. If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?

A few years back I crossed over into the “dark side” of fifty. This has been a very liberating age – full of changes, challenges and growth. Something happens when you hit the half century mark: you realize that it’s none of your business what other people think of you. When you get that, you’re free to think about other, more productive, things. I’m really enjoying my fifties.

  1. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I’d get my private pilot’s license – something that I’m planning to do in 2015.

  1. Have you ever met a famous person? Who and Where?

About fifteen years ago I met Joan Rivers. She was speaking at a fundraiser for the Orlando Coalition for the Homeless. Many people don’t know what a great motivational speaker she was. And she kept saying that no matter how bad today is, you will wake up tomorrow and it will be different. And she was right. You’ve got to wake up every day and start anew. Otherwise you might miss something wonderful.

To reach Tommy Drake, your local Allstate agent, call (706) 745-4400 or email tommydrake@allstate.com. His office is located at 44-B Town Square, Blairsville, GA 30512.

Five Reasons to Attend a Ribbon Cutting

rcIf you have any connection with our Chamber at all, you have most likely seen an unbelievable amount of ribbon cuttings being posted over the summer. This is exciting for all of us. What it means is that business is thriving, jobs are being created, and new products and services are being offered here at home. Ok, but here is the question. Have you ever actually attended a ribbon cutting? Yes, I’m talking to YOU! Why not try a few? Here are five great reasons to join us at our next ceremony.

  1. You are invited. Contrary to some beliefs, ribbon cuttings are not just for chamber members, fellow business owners, or special invited guests. Ribbon cutting invitations extend to the entire community. Business owners are eager to meet you and learn about your needs as a customer. They want your ideas and they need your support. Showing up to wish them well in their endeavor is an amazing sign of local support and maybe just what they need to be successful in their journey.
  2. There is free stuff. Yes that usually includes food, and we all know everybody loves free food. Besides food though, new businesses will often offer special discounts to ribbon cutting attendees, free samples for you to take home and try, and door prizes that you have excellent odds of winning. Ribbon cutting attendees have a great time and likely leave with their hands full of goodies!
  3. You will meet new people. New to town? What a great way to meet a group of fun and active people. Looking to form a relationship with a potential client? Ribbon cuttings are the perfect scenario. Looking to rub elbows with community leaders? Here is where you will often find them. Want to build the foundation of a partnership with a local business? This is a great way to show your support and stand out from the crowd. Whatever your reason for wanting to meet new people, ribbon cuttings offer a comfortable setting to do just that.
  4. They are quick. No really, I promise. The ceremonial portion is usually complete within 15 minutes and it is up to you how much longer you wish to stay, browse, eat, and socialize.
  5. You will make people happy. If for no other reason, please know that if you decide to join us at an upcoming ribbon cutting, we will be very happy to see you. The business owners love new faces, the attendees love to meet people, and the Chamber staff loves to see the community come together to support small business.

If you would like to subscribe to our newsletter to receive notifications of our upcoming ribbon cuttings, you may do so online at www.VisitBlairsvilleGa.com or by calling our office at 706-745-5789.
