In Blairsville-Union County we are firm believers that pets are family too. In fact, we have a whole dog park here for Fido to run around and enjoy! Located at Meeks Park, next door to North Georgia Technical College, is a section of park just for you and your four-legged family members to enjoy. Not only does the park include a little over one mile of walking trails that meander along the banks of Nottely River, but there is also an off-leash area that is completely fenced in with two pens and a state-of-the-art doggie drinking fountain! Clean-up bags are always available at dispensers throughout the park. Meeks Dog Park is an ideal place to have doggie play dates or to work on socializing your pup. I mean let’s face it, dogs need social lives too!
Fortunately, several of our local business owners are also pet friendly! There are sixteen lodging partners that welcome your pets. Michael and Louise Jasmin of Alpine Cabins stated “We realize that our guests’ pets are members of their families, and we treat them as such. It is important to us to make their pets feel as welcome and valued as their two-legged parents! Since we are both pet lovers ourselves, this is easy to do!” At Paradise Hills Resort and Spa their four-legged guests are greeted with special dog blankets and delicious cookies!
We are proud to have six pet friendly restaurants in and around Blairsville-Union County. Michaelee’s Italian Life Café loves for guests to bring their precious pups with them. They provide clean doggie bowls and lots of attention! When you’re in the mood for some delicious barbecue, Jim’s Smokin’ Que welcomes four-legged family members to dine on the porch. There is also porch dining at Monet’s, Cabin Coffee, and The Hole in the Wall.
There are a lot of fun things to do with your pets in Blairsville-Union County as well. Maybe take a hike up to Brasstown Bald with your pooch or rent a pontoon boat from North Georgia Watersports where the whole family can enjoy beautiful Lake Nottely. Maybe wine tastings are on your list of activities. Most area wineries allow pups on their patios and Odom Springs Vineyards even keeps a jar of dog treats just for your traveling companions.
If you are planning an evening out or if you are taking a day trip to another close by mountain town, either Bunker Hill Kennels or Pinecliff Boarding Kennels can help you out. If you aren’t inclined to board them Home Sweet Home In-Home Pet Sitters will come by your cabin or home and take care of them in the comfort of your own space. Of course, if needed, there are two great veterinarians in town, Union County Pet Hospital or Blairsville Animal Hospital.
Don’t have a pet yet, but are thinking about getting one or two or three? We encourage you to check out The Humane Society’s Mountain Shelter or the Whiskers Project for canines and felines. If your interests are a little more exotic than dogs and cats, you should check out Pet City USA for a variety of options from reptiles to canaries.
